This film was released after the Thunderbirds TV series had been replaced by Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons.
Mister X, the mysterious designer of aircraft for International Rescue offers his design for an "airship" to a commercial airline. After laughing at him, they build it anyway. Jeff Tracy orders Brains to design a Thunderbird 6, so Mister X is unable to go on the maiden flight of Skyship 1. Alan Tracy is to fly to London on a World War I era bipline and Tin-Tin is to take a commercial flight two weeks later. Why they don't just take the Tracy's passanger jet is not explained. Tin-Tin disobeying Jeff Tracy stows away on the Tiger Moth, with Alan. Alan, Tin-Tin, Lady Penelope and Parker, representing International Rescue are the only passangers on the Skyship 1. Unbeknowst to them someone (the Hood?) has had the crew murdered and replaced with hired mercenaries as part of a plot to capture Thunderbirds 1 and 2. Skyship 1 is automated, the crew is only needed if the computer malfunctions.
Brains shows several models of a Thunderbird 6 to Jeff Tracy who rejects them one after the other. It took brains 28 days to come up with his first design and he becomes increasingly angry at each rejection, smahing the models. He hides is anger from the Tracys however. One guess as to what Thunderbird 6 ends up being.
The ending was obvious from the start and there were things that didn't make sense. Mr. Tracy telling Brains that International Rescue needs a Thunderbird 6 but not telling him what rescues it should be designed for (or who would pilot it) then expecting Brains to design it without any input was absurd, and mean. And what was with Alan claiming he would never marry because he couldn't put another person through the dangerous life he leeds? That would make sense if he had given a ring to an outsider, but he gave the ring to and is in love with Tin-Tin, a member of International Rescue.
John Tracy didn't sound right to me. He and Gordon didn't have much of a role. Grandma Tracy who was missing from "Thunderbirds Are Go" appears in this film, it's Tin-Tin's father who is missing.
We learn that Brains in addition to desiging the International Rescue machines is himself a pilot. Lady Penelope gets a crash course (pun intended) in flying herself.
