anyone else enjoy this multinational movie? there are several versions out, mostly fullscreen PD copies, but i recommend the widescreen Wade Williams disc- it's gorgeous. the original version "The Silent Star" is now out as a subtitled disc, but i have not seen it. might be interesting to hear.
a spool from Venus is found on Earth, and a set of scientists are sent to the Morning Star. during the trip they find out that Venus was planning to invade Earth in 1908, but failed for some reason.
the sets are cool and the story is nice. i highly enjoy this movie!

Love it Megs. First saw it at a Saturday Matinee in the '60s. Those little, buggy robot creatures underground creeped me out a bit back then. I remember thinking how awful it must have felt to have them hopping the astronaut.
I have a PD VHS version, but maybe I'll get that Wade Williams disk eventually.

glad to see you again, Lunk! hope you had a good trip.
i can make you a copy at some point, the color makes those PD tapes and discs look puny. it'll be after i move (again) but not too far in the future.

i'm watching the East German version now- THE SILENT STAR. the print is even nicer than the Wade Williams version, and there's about 15 minutes more in this one. it's dubbed in German with English subs. the stuff that was cut out is mostly propaganda against capitolists and for socialists (some of which was altered with dubbing as well) but all in all this is an amazing film for the time.
the international cast sounds weird all speaking German, but are dubbed pretty well.

I watched an English dubbed version which is part of a 10 film collection titled Sci Fi Flicks. In this version the year is 1985, 77 years after the Venusian ship blew up leaving the recording. Also in this version one of the men who goes to Venus is an American astronaut. The propaganda is anti-war rather than anti-west or anti-capitolist.
