Warning there are some spoilers.
Doctor Who: The Ribos Operation (September 1978)
Tom Baker as The Doctor
John Leeson as the voice of K9 (Mark 2)
and introduces Mary Tamm as Romana
The White Guardian of Time (order) sends the Doctor after the six segments of the Key To Time, which are scattered through time and space. Reassembled the Key To Time can be used to "stop everything". Something the White Guardian has to do occasionally to restore balance
to the universe. Each segment will not only be in a different time and place but disguised as a different form.
The first segment of the Key To Time is in the form of a lump of Jethrik, the most valuable minieral in the galaxy.
To assist him on his quest the Doctor is given a new companion (Leela having stayed on Gallifrey), the Time Lady Romanadvortrelundar. The Doctor calls her "Romana" because by the time he shouted "Look out!
Romanadvortrelundar" she'd be dead. At least that is his excuse. It seemed to me that even she had trouble pronouncing her full name. I wonder how many takes it took Mary Tamm. She had to say it twice!
The K9 in this story and following is a second, slightly improved model. The original stayed on Gallifrey with Leela. K9 mark 2 will eventually leave with Romana (number 2). K9 mark 3 appears in "K9 and Company", a one episode attempt at a Doctor Who spinoff, as well as
having a cameo in "The Five Doctors".
The White Guardian warns the Doctor that there is a second Guaridan who wants the Key for his own purpose, an evil purpose. "Beware the Black Guardian". The Black Guardian (chaos) doesn't actually make an appearance until the final Key To Time story.
The Pirate Planet (September, Octorber 1978)
Tom Baker as The Doctor
Mary Tamm as Romana
John Leeson as the voice of K9
The TARDIS heads for Callufrax, where the second segment of the Key To Time is located, but ends up on Zanak. Zanak turns out to be a hollow planet which is piloted through space by massive transmat engines
which allow it to dematerlizae in one point and rematerlize at another, around a planet. The pirate planet then sucks all the minerals out of the capture world. Inhabited planets have been wiped out this way.
This story is one of three written by Douglas Adams and features one of my favorite villains, "The Captain". His crazy quotes are great. "By the left frontal lob of the great space demon...". "By the fiery parrot of hell..." [those may not be exact quotes since I didn't write them down]. His parrot the electronic Pollyphase Ambitron (sp?) is "killed" by the great hunting dog, K9. This is probably one of the
episodes the serious science fiction fans hate. I love it.
The second segment of the Key To Time is....Callufrax!
These Tom Baker episode DVDs don't have much in the way of extras. Audio commentary, text commentary. Who's Who and picture galleries.
