(actually 2nd best, since the Doctor once said Sarah Jane Smith was his best friend).
According to Doctor Who script writter Terrance Dicks fans of Doctor Who are evenly divided into those who love the robotic dog K9 and those who loath him.
The original K9 was with the Doctor from October 1977 through March 11, 1978. The voice of K9 was provided by John Leeson.
K9 was introduced in "The Invisible Enemy" (4 episodes). The Doctor (Tom Baker) is infected by a space virus and seeks help from the Bi-Al Foundation. Professor Marius head of the Foundation likes dogs so when he moved to the space station and could not take a dog with him he made a computer in the shape of a dog. When he returns to Earth he can't take the robotic dog with him because of weight restrictions on the spacecraft so he gives K9 to the Doctor.
K9 is with the Doctor in the next 4 stories (18 more episodes, so total of 22). K9 stays on Gallifrey with Leela at the end of "The Invasion of Time ". In the last scene the Doctor alone in the TARIDS brings out a box labeled "K9 mark II".
K9 mark II is with the Doctor from September 1978 through January 1981. For the first and third years the voice of K9 mark II was provided by John Leeson. For the second year David Brierly provided K9's voice.
K9 mark II is first seen at the beginning of "The Ribos Opertation", the first Key To Time story. The Doctor is happy with just K9 but The Guaridan forces a flesh and blood companion, Romana, on him. K9 mark II is with the Doctor much longer than the original. At the end of "Warriors Gate" K9 mark II stays in E-Space with Romana 2.
In the first (and last) episode of the Doctor Who spin off "K9 and Company", Sarah Jane Smith, former companion to the 3rd and 4th Doctors receives a Christmas present from the Doctor (presumablly #4), the robotic dog K9 mark III. It is this K9 which makes a cameo appearance in the Doctor Who 20th anniversary special "The Five Doctors". So now you know what K9 was doing with Sarah Jane. K9 mark III's voice was provided by John Leeson.
The actual robotic dog was apparently a pain to work with. Signals from the cameras would interfere with it sending it rolling out of the scene. And of course K9 didn't function well on rough surfaces. The 5th Key to Time story "The Power of Kroll" took place in a marsh, so K9 was left in the TARDIS. John Leeson made his one and only physical appearance in Doctor Who as Dugeen, a technician who sadly ends up dead. He did not sound like K9 in that role.
My favorite K9 scene is one where after the Doctor quotes "any one for tennis?", Romana asks K9 to explain tennis and then when he asks which kind and the Doctor calls for Romana, Romana says "Forget it K9", K9 responds. "Erasing tennis from memory banks. Memory banks erased."
