Early in the 21st century all forms of transportation on Earth have been rendederd obsolete by T-Mat, instantanous travel over any distance. T-Mat is controled from the moon. Just as the system begins breaking down the Doctor, Jammie and Zoe arrive. They pilot the last available rocket to the moon and discover that the Icre Warriors (natives of Mars) are planning to use T-Mat to invade Earth.
This is their second attempt. The first was in "The Ice Warriors" and was also foiled by the second Doctor. Ice Warriors will be seen again in the 3rd Doctor story "The Curse of Peladon, which being in color reveals that yes they are green. The Ice Warriors final appearance is in "The Monster of Peladon" (unless they appear in the new series). Like the Cybermen the Ice Warriors are slow moving and invunerable to primative earth weapons. Unlike the Cybermen the Ice Warriors will eventually become peaceful members of the galatic community, but that's centuries after "The Seeds of Death".
The Seeds of Death is rather violent, most of the cast is wiped out by the Ice Warriors, though of course their invasion is stopped.
The VHS tape version of this 6 episode story has been editted into a single movie length story. I prefer my Doctor Who stories in their original episodic format but few Patrick Troughton stories have survived so I'll take them in whatever format they come. I got the the tape because their available cheap as sellers try to eliminate their stock of tapes as more titles are released on DVD.
Seeds of Death is neither the best nor worst Patrick Troughton story. The idea of a human base on the moon being used by aliens to invade Earth is similar to the first Doctor story "The Moonbase" in which the Cybermen try it. Seeds of Death should not be confused with the 4th Doctor story "The Seeds of Doom" which is very different.
Later "War Games"
