Alot of people like to criticze George Lucas for stealing all of his ideas for Star Wars and the fact he never gave anything back to those individuals. Many like to point out all the stuff he ripped from Kurosawa, eispecially The Hidden Fortress. Lucas has always admited he was inspired to create the relationship and comedic banter of R2 and 3PO from the sidekicks in it. Now, for all of you that lambast Lucas, do any of you know that he helped finance Kagemusha? If taking your own money and putting it into somebody else's project doesn't show gratitude, what does? The fact that Lucas never trumpeted up that fact indicates to me that it was a heartfelt gesture.

Hey, you know who you are. Like to point out that Lucas is a hack that stole everything for Star Wars from other sources. Isn't every story a play off of the very first stories ever told? Man, I am not a Lucas nut, but there has been instances where people here have dismissed Star Wars as drivel because Lucas was devoid of any originality or creativity when he wasn't.

Well at least he has good taste when he borrows from other sources. I don't see any reason for anyone to be upset about him or anyone else using other movies/directors/stories for inspiration since that is the common thread of almost all stories great or small. They all borrow something from somewhere. Some do it better than others and the first two Star Wars movies speak for themselves.
Beyond Kagemusha, Lucas has helped Kurosawa with other projects such as using ILM to do the effects for DREAMS.
Sadly the directorial expertise that was seen in such "human dramas" as American Graffitti and indeed Star Wars and Empire was guided and at times forced by producer Gary Kurtz. With Jedi, Kurtz wanted the harsh tones of Empire kept up and George wanted Ewoks. So they parted ways and you can really tell the difference.
That's too bad, but in the end they're just movies. The new one definately looks better than the last two (or maybe even the last three!).

During all of this recent SW media blitz, I couldn’t help but to notice another thing in this relation. A scene in which Yoda is rubbing his head reminded me way too much of what Takashi Shimura did in “Seven Samurai”. Now, am I reading excessively into this thing or is it just a mere coincidence? Yes, I probably am evaluating too much into this for my own good, but I don’t think it’s a coincidence at all. To me, it will be like another nice Takashi Shimura homage, much the same way the actor in “Godzilla 2000” tucked in his tie like Shimura did in the original.

Hey, well, I just gave a little back to George Lucas too, for inspiring me way back when. I have my ticket for the midnight show, and I'll be going all by my lonesome--just like I saw the last two films, strangely enough!
But things have been different the last ten years...all the squid kids I used to hang out with grew up and moved away, or got lives, or something, and now they're all busy or similarly unavailable.
Well, at any rate, I can try to get a little of that old magic back. I remember, I met at least one really good friend while waiting in line overnight for "Return of the Jedi," and that guy became a longtime partner/associate. I'll try to "bond" with the fans this evening, as well...
Not exactly looking forward to getting out of the movie at 2:30 in the morning, but what the hey. I did it for Harry Potter, and I can do it for this. (I think a strong cup of coffee is called for, however.)
Oh boy! Well, here goes. I hope it's good! To any of you that are going, I hope you have a good time.

I'll see it next week when my nephew is in town and he asks me to take him. Otherwise I'd just wait to rent the DVD.

7 PM can't get here soon enough! I am absolutely stoked! Started listening to all my Star Wars related music yesterday, much to the chagrin of my Wife!
