Anyone remember this 1981 Roger Corman-produced horror/sci-fi effort? I just got a nice widescreen import copy and watched it a few nights ago. I hadn't seen it since HBO ran it, probably back in 1982 or so. I remember it being pretty cool back then, so I figured I'd check it out.
It always gets ripped for being an Alien clone, but other than a few models of the terrain of Planet Morganthus early in the film, it doesn't resemble Alien at all (although I'm sure the space premise was an attempt to cash in on the success of it). Actually, the film's concept predates films like Event Horizon and Sphere by quite a few years. Anyway, it's an apprpriately dark and brooding film, and we get to see a pre-Freddy Robert Englund as well as a gruesome death scene for Erin Moran (Joanie from Happy Days). A more obscure flick than usual, but I'm sure a few here have seen it.

It certainly was an unexpected twist, atlhough I had a feeling Ray Walston had some connection with the goings-on after he gave Robert Englund the kung-fu chop in the ship. It was a pretty satisfying film. The pace was good, there were plenty of gruesome scenes, and the gloomy atmosphere helped build some tension. I find that it's an unjustly maligned film, and more people should see it. It seems that some critics (both professional & amateur) enjoy ripping anything Roger Corman is involved with. Usually, his movies are at least fun, if not always brilliant.

I rented this with my neighbor and his mom when I was a freshman/sophomore in high school several years back. There was a mom n' pop video store near the university that not only had this movie, but was where I rented A Better Tomorrow for the first time.
This was a crazy little film, but very atmospheric. The finale was pretty wild, although I don't remember what was actually going on. I just remember the main hero taking on all the monsters that had previously appeared in the movie or something like that.
The most memorable scene was when one of the actors is getting killed by his own chinese star/boomerang and my neighbor's mom yelled, "Cut off your arm buddy!" and not two seconds later...whack!
