I saw it on the big screen several times. Very cheesy, but fun to watch. Whenever I meet fans of the Perry Rhodan series I slobber over it. You should see the horror in their eyes. ;D

i wish it could be seen over here in bigscreen glory- but i don't know that it ever HAD a theatrical release. the credits have the AIP-tv notice on them. didn't see any dubbing credits either.
but man, Rho-fans (as Forry called them) sure don't seem to like it. is the series still going on over there?

During the shooting of the movie, the original Perry Rhodan authors distanced themselves publicly from it after having watched some of the scenes already filmed. When it came out, it was a huge shock for the fans and the movie bombed. Even today it's generally seen as a betrayal of the original series by the fans.
> is the series still going on over there?
Yes. I don't know whether it's still as popular as in the 1960's and 1970's, but the generation of new authors keep on writing. Meanwhile, the series has spawned several radio dramas, computer games, and you can get some nice looking model kits. There was also some talk about a TV-miniseries some years ago, but nothing has happened so far.

well, it does seem to turn into a spy caper about 1/3 of the way into the movie, but the actors were well cast and the effects are pretty nice. i think it followed the first story pretty well, but i've not read that (just the synopsis in the second book). Forry called it "Enterprise Stardust" to make it different from the movie. i have enjoyed the books that i read, but adding the space beaver... it really started to get "far out"!

You mean "Gucky"?
When I was a teenager I followed the series up to episode 300 or so (they must be somewhere around episode 2.200 now), but then came a point where it started to get so weird that many fans said they were unable to follow the stories anymore. I don't know exactly when that happened, but it obviously was a major problem for the creators, since after much discussion the authors decided to return the series to more straight and action-packed science fiction adventures. The popularity of "dime novel" series like Perry Rhodan -- Jerry Cotton (thriller), Macabros (horror), John Sinclair (horror), Lassiter (western), Landser (world war 2) etc. -- has generally greatly declined in Germany during the last 20 years, but Perry Rhodan still lives on and seems to do reasonably well under the circumstances.

he was known as "Pucky" over here, since gucky can mean something gross, a blob of goo, etc.
i thought Zane Grey created "Lassiter" for his novel "Riders on the Purple Sage"- i guess this could be a different character, right?
man, 2,200 is a lot of books.

Uhm ... Lassiter was (or is) just one of the many "dime novel" series we have over here. I read one or two episodes many years ago, so I can hardly remember it. I don't think that it is related to a novel or a film. On the other hand, the Jerry Cotton series spawned several movies (starring George Nader), that I like very much.

That is the reason why all new authors were longtime Perry Rhodan fans before starting to write for the series. The publishing company maintains a gigantic and ever growing database containing every small detail about planets, races, technology, events, single characters, etc. with references to the respective episodes. (By the way, from all Perry Rhodan books and booklets more than 1 Billion copies were sold worldwide. Quite impressive, I'ld say.)

i'm sure the Lassiter name is common. like "Old Shatterhand" which is considered one of the first "spaghetti western" heroes. lots of movies have been made starring that character.
it's quite an enjoyable movie- and the actresss playing Thora does it very well (as does her dubber) getting the right mix of smugness, arrogance and confusion all at once. plus she's quite hot.
yeah, over 2,000 books and keeping it all straight really is something! impressive to me!

Here is an interesting link to the Wikipedia where you can read all about Old Shatterhand. As millions of other male Germans, I got my first books about him and Winnetou when I was 9 or 10 years old. He was my childhood hero, and I still love the books and most of the films. By the way, the German company Rialto will release all of their 9 Karl May films on DVD in about one week ... naturally, they'll be mine as soon as they'll hit the shelves. ;D

Just got the set and you won't believe it, but some of the films actually have English audio tracks. That will be fun! I looked into the first minutes of Treasure Of Silver Lake and the video quality (2.35:1, anamorphic) is fantastic.
