Evelyn, her husband Harold and Harold's lawyer Martin are skindiving in Puerto Rico. When they return to the boat he find the pilot dead and discover that without their scuba gear they cannot breath. The boat's engine won't start so they use a rowboat to make it to shore. By then their oxygen has ran out but they find that the island's plants have already begun to replace oyxgen. Finding no one else alive in their hotel they take over a villa on a hill, to escape the stench of decaying bodies in town. The next morning Harold discovers that insects, apparently able to surive in their eggs without oygen, alive. Afraid that insects and dead bodies will lead to the spreading of disease, Harold makes plans for the trio to move north, to Canada, were the colder climate will protect them from insects. He also assumes more heavily populated places would be more likely to have other survivors. Problems arise when the personalites of the two men clash. Harold, the strong-willed businessman, insists on surviving and forcing the other two to survive as well. Martin, the pessemestic lawyer, thinks nothing matters and his defeatist attitude threatens to destroy them. More problems develope when Evelyn and Martin become too fond of each other and Harold has to remind that both that Evevlyn is his wife. Martin, the lawyer, thinks marriage is just a legal arrangment that ceases to exist when the government that required the marriage license it is no more. Harold looks at as more than that [and he's right, the concept of marriage exited before there were governments to license marriages]. Evelyn was unhappy in the marriage and was flirting with Martin before the disaster.
Exactly what happened is never explained nor do we learn if there are other survivors.
Last Woman on Earth is one of 10 films in a 3 DVD set titled Sci Fi Flicks.
