He receives a message from Earth ordering him to pull Captain Frank Chapman off the planned Mars project to assign him to finding this "Phantom Planet". After entering a strong magnetic field Pegasus IV loses contact with Luna Base 1 and encounters several meteors. One of which disables the ships engines. The captain and his navigator, Lieutenant Ray Makonnen, exit the ship to make repairs. A fast moving ionized particle strikes the captain cutting his air line. The navigator manages to get the captain back into the ship but another particle hits the navigator sending him adrift. Realsing that he's dooomed the navigator begins to pray, "Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name..." Chapman recovers to find that he's alone and that his ship is being drawn towards an asteroid. He's able to right the ship so that lands instead of crashing. Chapman soon discovers that the asteroid is inhabited but to the inhabitants he is a giant. However, exsposure to the alien atmosphere causes him to shrink to their size.
