A small Kansas town tries to survive after a nuclear attack on the United States.
The following cities seemingly have been hit:
Denver
Atlanta
Chicago
Philadelphia
San Diego
Dallas
Kansas City
Seattle
San Francisco
Los Angeles
Minneapolis
St. Louis
Detroit
Cincinnati
New Orleans
Major characters:
Jake Green, son of Johnston and Gail Green, left town in disgrace. Returns 5 years later to claim an inheritance from his newly deceased grandfather and ends up having to stay after Denver is hit by an atom bomb. Where he spent the last 5 years is an unexplained mystery, although his mother thinks she knows and asked him to tell his father. The father aggravated the audience by saying he did not want to know, wherever Jake was he left town a punk and came back a decent man, that's good enough for dad. His passport indicates that he has been to Honduras, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Qatar, Columbia, Peru and Guatemala. Wears dogtags.
Johnston Green (what kind of name is that) is the current mayor of Jericho. Seems to have the flu.
Gail Green the mayor's wife, a former nurse. She knows (or thinks she does) where Jake has been for the last 5 years.
Eric Green, son of Johnston and Gail, deputy mayor. Married to April Green, a doctor, but having an affair with local bartender Mary Bailey. Takes over local government when father is home ill.
April Green, doctor, married to Eric. Before the nuclear attack on Denver had divorce papers written up. Does not want the divorce now. Doesn't know about Eric's affair.
Robert Hawkins, brought his family to Jericho before the attacks, knows more than he is telling. Claims to be a former St. Louis police officer. Has EMP protected equipment including a "government issued" PC which he uses to contact some mysterious group. US Government agent? Foreign spy? Terrorist? Married to Darcy Hawkins who resents his taking back control of the family after having been gone for 4 years. They have a teen age daughter Allison and young son Samuel. These names are apparently false, as Hawkins is hiding their true identities. After Allison discovers his working PC and map of target cities he teachers her how to use a hand gun, in case she ever has to defend herself. Mom is not aware of this.
Heather Lisinsk, elementary school teacher, she and her students rescued by Jake after their bus had an accident. She has a crush on Jake.
Stanley Richmond, young unmarried farmer who owns the largest farm near Jericho. Cannot pay back taxes and IRS has claimed his farm (before the attacks).
Bonnie Richmond, Stanley's younger sister. Deaf but can read lips and understand sign language.
Dale Turner, teenage boy, now orphaned as mother was on trip to Atlanta when the city was bombed. Lived in trailer park, until it burnt down, works in local grocery store. Looked down upon by the rich kids.
Gracie Leigh, local grocery store owner, does not seem to understand than in a post nuclear war America money is of no value.
Skylar Stevens, rich girl, snob. Afraid parents visiting New York may have been killed. Becoming friendly with Dale Turner despite her friends labeling him a "freak".
Mimi Clark, IRS agent from DC, sent to audit the Richmond farm. Got stock in Jericho by nuclear attacks. Stereotypical big city girl, looks down on the locals, trades a reduction in taxes for room and board at the farm. Probably going to end up in a romance with Stanley Richmond.
Mary Bailey, runs local bar where before the power went out many townspeople hang out in hopes the satellite dish on the roof would pick up some news. Thinks the deputy mayor will leave his wife for her (Mimi Clark tried to tell her he wouldn't). He hasn't.
Gray Anderson, the mayor's political rival. Left town to learn what's happening to rest of the country. Returns next week with news of the ouside world.
Jericho is low on fireman because the mayor sent most of them to Denver to help that city after the first nuclear explosion. After escaped criminals killed the sheriff and other deputies Jericho has only two law enforcement officers, Bill and Jimmy. The Deputy Mayor has become acting sheriff and fire chief. Robert Hawkins has volunteered his services as a deputy. After an EMP burst in episode 6 most of the electronics have been disabled. Law and order is breaking down as vandals aggravate the townspeople and horse thieves hit the Green's farm.
The preview of episode 7 makes it sound like Washington DC is gone but New York City has survived. However series previews are often edited to be misleading.
I haven't been watching from the beginning. I cought episode 5 by accident last week and tuned into see what would happen in episode 6.
Its far from perfect. This small Kansas town appears to be irreligious which is not realstic . After three weeks (Jericho time) most of the townspeople have still not got it through their heads that life in America has changed. I could do without the adulterous deputy sheriff (does every drama have to have an unfaithful married man?) What has me watching are the unanswered questions:
Who has attacked us: another nation, foreign terrorists, local terrorists or traitors in our own government? [Some fans think its a civil war, which makes no sense to me at all but its the PC answer so its probably correct - though I sure hope not]
Who is Hawkins working for? Who's side is he on? Why is he not sharing what he knows with the town? Hero or villain?
Where did Jake spend the last 5 years? Why is his passport flagged? What was he doing in all those foreign countries? Hero or villain?
Are there other survivors in other towns?
Does the US Government still exist in any meaningful form?
Have other nations been attacked too?
Where did the 2 missiles seen at end of episode 5 go? Who launched them?
