This spin off from Babylon 5 was intended to run 5 season but TNT canceled it after only 13 episodes. The reason for the mission of the space ship Excalibur is set up in Babylon 5: A Call to Arms television movie.
The Drakh former servants of the ancient race known as "The Shadows" (because their real name is unprouncable) failed in their attempt to destroy the planet Earth. So the fell back on plan B. The infected Earth with a super virus. The virus is not immediatly fatal as it has to adampt itself to the inhabitants of each planet it is used against. So all those on Earth have 5 years to live. To protect the rest of the Galaxy the planet Earth is under quarentine. No one can leave it and no one can land on it. Humans who were off world and an alien from another world destroyed by the Drakh, form the crew of the Exaclibur, assigned the task of searching the galaxy for a cure.
Main characters:
Captain Matthew Gideon - commander of the Interstellar Alliance ship Excalibur, generally takes the moral highground but will break laws to save Earth if neccesary. Personally chosen by Interstellar Alliance president John Sheridan. Secretly possess an alien device "The Apocolypse Box" which talks to give him giving him advise as how to proceed. The device carries a curse and is not always honest. The device actually speaks in Gideon's own voice. "Just so we're clear: once we go, this is my command. I'll do whatever's necessary. If that means turning the entire galaxy upside down and shaking its pockets to see what falls out, that's what I'll do. I'm not subtle, I'm not pretty, and I'll whiz off a helluva lot of people along the way, but I'll get the job done."
Lieutenant John Matheson - first officer, second-in-command of the Excalibur, a telepath. Assisgned at the insistence of Capt. Gideon. "The more you make a big deal out of denying something, the more people think it must be true."
Max Eilerson - archeologist and language expert, actually works for Interplanetary Expeditions a multi-planet corporation. Assigned to assist Captian Gideon, Max is a pain in the rear. He's motivated by profit. Raised on the Martian Colony. Mars recently granted indepedence. Most Mars born humans are not interested in helping Earth.
Galen - a Techno-Mage, who had saved Gideon's life 10 years prior to the series. He was exiled from the technomage's order in 2267 after he helped Earth and the Alliance fight the Drakh in the battle that resulted in Earth becoming infected with the plague. Techno-Mages use advanced science which gives the appearance of magic. Apparently an unfilmed episode would have revealed the Techno-Mages to be cyborgs created by the Shadows, against whom they rebelled. This discovery would cause a rift between Gideon and Galen. "I never hold a grudge.... I have no surviving enemies, at all."
Dr. Sarah Chambers - ship medical officer. She was on Mars during the Drakh attack.
Dureena Nafeel - member of a interplanetary theives guild. last known survivor of a planet wiped out by the Drakh. Wants Galen to teach her to become a Techo-Mage. He declines because she would use the power for revenge. Supposedly she would have vanished for some second season episodes to return with a sword and lose of memory. She would follow a dark path which would create a rift between her and Galen. "Look, I don't like having to trust anyone because I'm always disappointed. But just once I'd like to know that I could actually trust someone, that for at least one person everything wasn't about money or power."
Captain Elizabeth Lochley - commander of Babylon 5. Met Capt. Gideon during a conference held on Mars. Appears infrequently but listed in opening credit sequence.
According to executive producers and head writer J. Michael Straczynski most people assumed that when the cure was found the series would have ended, not so. He had intended for the cure to be found half way through the second season. Then the heroes of Earth would become outcasts when they discover that a secret Earth government agency has been collecting and experimenting with Shadow technology. To save mankind from this folly the crew of Excalibur would become the enemy of Earth's government.
Crusade was canceled before completling the first season. According to J. Michael Straczynski the season would have ended with Captain Gideon being killed. He would have remained with the crew in spirit for the second season however, trapped in the Box.
According to J. Michael Straczynski TNT aired the 13 episodes in the wrong order. The DVDs follow tv order. The recommended order (using DVD episode #s) is: 9, 11, 10, 2, 12, 3, 13, 5, 4, 6, 7, 1, 8. 9: Racing the Night was originally to be the pilot, when it was to follow a week after A Call to Arms. When that didn't happen it was pushed back to episode 9 and 1: The War Zone was filmed as the new pilot.
I've only watched 3 episodes but I liked them.
Apparently there is a plan to produce direct to DVD Babylon 5 movies perhaps there is a chance for further adventures of the Excalibur.
