A space probe goes off course, crasing in a small town in New Mexico. The entire population of the town is wiped out except for one old man and a baby. A team of three scientists and one medical doctor working in a top secret government lab in Nevada, hope to insolate the deadly organism, determine how it works and what can be done to counter it before it spreads through out the planet.
First movie based on a novel by Michael Crichton. His publisher told him it was a well written book but would only sell 2,000 copies. It became a best seller and a good movie. I saw the movie on late night tv years ago. Then read the novel. Then saw the movie on tv again. Then read the book again. Then bought the DVD which I've finally watched. Obviously its one of my favorite science fiction stories. The book was written as if a true story complete with a bibliography of scientific sources, none of which actually exist. The move has an almost documentary feel to it. The screen writter turned one of the male characters (Dr. Leavitt) into a woman. It didn't hurt the plot since the scientist's gender was unimportant to the story. Kate Reid plays Dr. Ruth Leavitt with a costic sense of humor.
Michael Crighton has a brief cameo in the film as a beared surgeon. He has no lines.
The film was made before CGI. It used ground breaking photographic teniques to simulate enhanced images of the micro organism. The central core of the underground lab was built in a soundstage and required cutting 70 feet deep, 30 feet deep wide hole in the floor.
Note the lab monkey killed by Andromeda was actually exposed to CO2 which made it convulse and collapse. It was immediatly given oxygen and revived.
The DVD includes the following bonus material:
Making of The Andromeda Strain
A Portrait of Michael Crighton
Trailer
Recommendations
I expect someone will do a remake replacing all the special photography with CGI. And turning several of the men into woman so there can be a total unncesssary romance complete with sex scene. (Sigh).
