The Voice of the Kamen Rider Series
Noted narrator and voice talent Nakae Shinji (born 04/03/1935) was a member of the Drama Class of Kamakura High School, who went onto join the CBC Theatrical Troupe, the Modern Theatrical Troupe, Theater Echoand Aoni Productions. A very sought-after voice talent, Nakae was the narrator for such famous television series such as THE SCARED ANGEL (Kizudarake-no Tenshi, 1974-1975), HOWL AT THE SUN!, G-MEN '75, SPECIAL INVESTIGATION: FRONTLINE and NHK's MODERN CLOSEUP (Gendai Kurosuappu, 1993-). He also narrated or played Newscasters in Masuda Toshio's CATASTROPHE: 1999 (Nosutoradamusu-no Daiyogen, 1974), Ishida Katsumune's CONFLAGRATION (Tokyo Wan Enjo, 1975) and Fukuda Jun's THE WAR IN SPACE (Wakusei Daisenso, 1977), produced by Toho.
Nakae's most famous narration job was that of the original Kamen Rider series – with the exception of KAMEN RIDER AMAZON (narrated by Naya Goro) – including the 1976, 1979 and 1984 television specials and the various theatrical featurettes. Nakae also served as a narrator for several Anime series, including TEKKAMAN: THE SPACE KNIGHT (Uchu-no Kishi Tekkaman, 1975), FRUIT BASKET (Furutsu Basuketto, 2001) and THE MASK OF GLASS (Garasu-no Kamen, 2005) – he also provided voices for Somen-Man in FIGHT! RAMEN-MAN (Tatakae! Ramenman, 1988), Goemon in NTV's LITTLE SUPERMAN: GANBARON (1977) and as Alien Metron in Episode 8 of Tsuburaya Productions' ULTRA SEVEN (1967-68 ).
Nakae's other tokusatsu narratives include Tsuburaya Productions' MIGHTY JACK (1968) and EMERGENCY COMMAND: 10-4/10-10 (1972), Toei's TRANSFORMING NINJA ARASHI (1972-73), Kokusai Hoei's WILD 7 (1972-73), Toho's DIAMOND EYE (Daimondo Ai, 1973-74), Tsuburaya Productions' DINOSAUR CATCHERS: BORNFREE (1976-77), NTV's LITTLE SUPERMAN: GANBARON (1976-77), the parody skit KAMEN NORIDA (1987) and Ishimori Shotaro's VOICESLUGGER (1999).
In 1984, he provided the voice of Kamen Rider ZX in the KAMEN RIDER television special, and later served as narrator for various Kamen Rider videos and video games. His most recent work was the narration for the DVD paranormal documentary series WOO PROJECT (2005). But, Nakae, who succumbed to liver cancer, will always be remembered as the "voice" of the Kamen Rider series.
