it's quite good. i've only watched episode #1, and it looks and sounds very good. i had the subs on during the English dub, which is fun and shows some interesting differences. some of the translations are a bit weird though.
i also looked through the Kaiju Enc. and it's good, tho they use weird translations of the monsters names- i mean, "Jiraasu"? is that needed?
but all in all, it's the best bootleg set out there!

picked up V. 2 today. i have not watched these episodes for some time, as i am seeing a ton of things i missed in the past.
BCI has tried to "explain" why there are parts not dubbed in English, which of course us fans know is a blatant truth stretching to be polite about it. still, the picture looks nice, and the sound is good. i stand by my earlier quote about this being the best bootleg set out there, at least picture-wise.

I e-mailed Cliff MacMillian about that disclaimer, and told him that it's not true. He said that he just assumed that was the case and that he should have asked me first (I have all of the UA-TV versions recorded off air from 1983. There was very little edited out of ULTRAMAN, and most of it was bits of violence in no more than three episodes, two of which did not involve dialogue: Episode 8 when Chandra bites Red King's arm, a few frames of blood were trimmed, and Episode 10 when Ultraman rips off Jiras' frill. The third was in Episode 34 where a man commits suicide jumping off of a tall building and at the end when a bird gives Ide a gift from the sky. That's about it.

yeah, he SHOULD have asked you, or me, or some other fine folks. it's not like you would have helped him, but damn, they needed that expertise.
nice to see you 'round here again!

I stayed away from the Japanese SF boards for most of the year because I was trying to concentrate on my manuscript -- which I completed a month ago. I was invited to Planet X and hung around there just to hear about the disasters going on a MZ, which I haven't been to since the beginning of the year. I'd take a peek over at Tokyo Monsters, and a Horror Movie Board, just to break up the monotony. But, I tried to keep away from the busier boards because I just didn't have time for the distraction. Well, I had a meeting today, and they said that my writing was terrific, which is nice to hear from such a huge publishing company as Chronicle Books. We go through the edited manuscript next week, and then start selecting photographs (the book is going to be heavily illustrated). The week after that, they start designing layouts. I can't wait to see some of the first galleys! Back to ULTRAMAN, when they first signed with Chaiyo, Cliff e-mailed me and asked if I would help, and I had to respectfully decline because of my close relationship with TPC, which I didn't want to jeopardize. Now, I wish that I just gave them a proper list of monster names and episode titles ("Forbidden World"? It's "Forbidden WORDS"!)... Oh well. He is tapping me for other projects, such as the interview with Ken Wallace I did for the SISTER STREET FIGHTER box set, and some other things they are working on... Anyhow, it's good to be back! Thanks for the welcome!

i wonder how TPC's recent thumping of Chaiyo is affecting this set. we can only hope things improve now.
i'm still very interested in those other projects... (ya wiseguy! )

I can tell you that the three great Japanese series from the 1970s that BCI has licensed the rights to has now grown to four! I have been hired by them to work on all of these DVD box sets, and these will be released consecutively, the first of which will be announced at the San Diego Comic Con, I believe. Very exciting stuff! Stay tuned...

i am watching a few episode now, it's still quite fun, despite some of the goofs in titles. better than any other bootleg set i ever owned, plus they play on any DVD player!
