i thought it would be a nice thing to have a thread to review the various (and mostly excellent) DVDs that the WWe keeps releasing.
i've seen Flair, Eddie, Benoit, the LOD and just bought the Superstar Billy Graham one. it's amazing how good these are compared to the current product that we usually see on tv.
so, any reviews?

The Ric Flair set is awesome and shows why the Nature Boy will always be the man.
Hulk still rules was pretty cool and it was neat seeing some of his early WWWF stuff. Not as incllusive as I would havew liked, but still nice.
RVD One of a Kind was awesome as sin. I really like how they showed his WCW stint as Robbie V because I remembered him during that time and thought it was cool to see how insane he was in ECW. This set also shows how badly WWE missed the boat with this guy.
Chris Benoit's set is really cool. I like how there was Japanese footage on there and many folks got the chance to see how great Jushin Liger was. I wish there was some Stampede footage on there, but a nice little set. This set shows why Benoit is one of the best in ring performers from the last ten years.
The Bret Hart set was just flat out great. It was cool seeing how he progressed from a tag team specialist and then seeing the progression from IC to World Champ to legendary stature. The Stampede footage was rwally cool, I would have loved it had they gotten one of the old Bret Hart-Tigermask matches, but still a good set with some candid interviews.
The Superstar Graham set was really cool. I loved the old AWA footage and loved seeing his title win against Bruno. There was alot of candid bits on there. I felt they really glossed over the end of his career a little too much. Out of all the sets WWE has put out so far, this set had the most ecclectic footage and I felt WWE finally started making great use of their vast library.
The Eddy Gurerro set was very cool. I felt Eddy's candor when discussing his problems was refreshing and yet sad considering his death. Eddy was the best of the Gurerro boys and that is saying somehting consideirng they were all flat out awesome workers. I would have loved to get some of his Japanese stuff, but still good. I only wish they would have had one of his 30 minute draws against Malenko from ECW instead of their ECW swansong as I have not seen those matches in over a decade and they are still emblazone on my mind, they were that good.
The Superstars of the 80s set was good, but I felt there were obviously some great names missing like Nick Bockwinkel, Randy Savage, Ted DiBiase, Wahoo McDaniel, etc. but it is still a cool lookback to what we no longer have.
The Road Warrior set was good. My only gripe is Animal trying to downplay the sucsess Hawk had with Kensuke Saske in Japan. There was some great old school stuff that shows why these guys are my favs.
The Undertaker set was okay. Unlike all the other recent relases they went the Kayfabe route and once I got past that I enjoyed the set. I felt this set showed just how enduring the Taker has been in WWE.
The Rise and Fall of ECW was simply awesome. My only gripe is the downplaying of the great runs Shane Douglas and Raven had in ECW. The Forever Hardcore DVD rectified that and is a great companion peice to this set.
The ECW Bloodsport DVD was pretty damn good and showed just how hard hitting ECW was. There was more to ECW than hardcore garbage matches and while there was plenty of bloodletting, there was still some damn good wrestling presented.
The Jake Roberts set was pretty good. I just feel you can't give a good representation of the Snake's career without any Midsouth footage where he was truly great.

i'm watching this wwe DVD- "The Self Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior". it's a lot more fair than i thought it would be, Hogan, Slaughter and even da Brawler put Warrior over, tho they do say he had a few lessons taught to him a time or two.
Heenan hates the guy, and tells a great story of Andre.
interesting to note we don't see his feud with the Undertaker, and i bet we don't see his squash of HHH either. ah well, it's fascinating to watch- the guy was SO over. i find it very interesting that many of the most over stars wrestlers are not always the best "workers".

the Jake set is fascinating- i still think he's working us, even now, but i sure hope he gets his life straightened out, if he hasn't yet.
but yeah, they sure are missing Mid-South footage, since he ruled there. and where's his matches with Ronnie Garvin?
i've only watched the first DVD, so perhaps it's on the next set.

Yeah, they have one of their Georgia matches for the TV Title on there.

boy that was cool to watch. i missed that match originally, but i saw several other encounters between Jake and Ronnie- i wish we could just get that fued on DVD. boy i love GCW from that time period.
watched disc 1 of the Hart set, the doc was really good. i don't think the Hart Foundation was as great as they claim, but they were quite good toward the end. i'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the discs.
now, let's get the Dusty set out!

got the Big Dust set today- it's really quite nice as well, love that early AWA footage between the Outlaws and Crusher and Bruiser. the commentary on the second match is hilarious!
i'm glad they have two LOD matches on there that aren't on the LOD set, but it would be great to see him teaming with Magnum and with Nikita as well. and the match where Nikita turns face would be great also!

I enjoyed the Dusty set as well. The footage is bar none excellent. Super ecclectic with classic matches with him and Murdoch from the AWA. A couple of things that I noticed. Dusty overstated his chances of playing pro football. He did play in the Semi-Pro Continental League and he may very well have rcieved and offer try out with the Dolphins. This was during the AFL days and at first they were just looking for bodies but he made it sound like he was a certain lock to make it and he had zero chance to trun pro in basbeball. He also overstated his role in crowning the first Black World Champ as it was Bill Watts' decision to do so as Hank Aaron who was a TBS executive was upset by some racist jokes Bill told and this was a way to show he wasn't racist. Yes Dusty was listed as the booker at the time but it is known that Watts called the creative shots during his tenure. I do agree about the Polka Dot WWF phase, but it is a testement to Dusty's charisma that he took them and the dumb gimmicks and got very much over.

I found the Mick Foley's Greatest Hits and Misses set used recently.(I traded in some games to get it)It has some pretty good stuff on it, I enjoyed his WCW stuff with Vader and Sting. I also enjoyed the lone Smokey Mountain(against the late and misused Chris Candido) match and the ECW stuff was pretty good. It was kind of fun seeing the transformation of Mankind from a deranged sociopath to a loveable goof. The very good Mind Games match against Shawn Michaels is on there, it was very good. It also had the infamous Hell in a Cell match, man those were some car wreck nasty bumps. His first WWF Title win is on there. I had forgotten how fun that time was in wrestling, and when Austin came out, man I haven't heard a pop like that in so long. If you like Mick Foley you will enjoy the set. I forgot, his WWF debut from way back in 86 is on there as he and Les Thornton faced the British Bulldogs. This was the match where Dynamite Kid dislocated Foley's jaw with a stiff clothesline, which Foley said he deserved for not knowing a rookie's place as he approcahed them backstage and suggested some things they should let him do in the match. Man he was freaking thin back then.

i bet i saw that match on tv. sounds like an interesting set. i'm not a huge Mick fan (tv wise), but i like him as a person. i wonder how much "worked shooting" is now going on between him and Flair with their fued.

I know there is some genuine hard feelings between the two as after Flair's book came out Foley asked him to sign his copy which Flair took as an insult and a breif fracas occoured.
Rey Misterio 619 was a pretty good set. There some really good matches on here from his WCW run( vs. Malenko, Eddy, and Jericho), but sadly none of his ECW stuff which was pretty damn good. His match with Latin Lover and Heavy Metal against Fuerza Guerrera, Lou Spicolli, and Psicosis from the When Worlds Collide PPV is on there though. My main gripe was about them refusing to show him without his mask as he wrestled like 2 years in WCW without it. He then talks about how sacred the mask is in the annals of Luche and how his was his life. Aside from that we got a candid look at Rey and his family. Rey came off as very likeable and you respect what he has accomplished with his small stature.

The WWE's Andre DVD was pretty good. It was their old Coliseum Tape transfered to DVD, but it was pretty good.
The new DX set, well I was disappointed. My Brother In Law bought it for me, if I had bought it I'd be ticked. The matches were very damn good, what bothered me is this was presented as a new set and it was just an old WWE Video transfered to DVD. I was expecting a nice little bio like they do on most sets and all we get is Triple H and Chyna bullying a still new to the WWF Michael Cole. I have to admit though, what was on there was great. If you are a DX fan you will like it. It isn't a bad set, just not what I expected. I didn't like how they downplayed Rick Rude's membership in the original DX as this tape came out after he jumped to WCW. DX was originally a quartet, not a threesome. The set goes all the way from the begining of DX until shortly after the new version with the Outlaws and X Pac. The matches featured were awesome and the matches with Owen Hart alone make this set worth the price.

The History of the WWE Title was okay. Many folks over at KM hate this set. It isn't that bad. The strong points were the title change between Ivan Koloff and Pedro Morales. I also really dug a Bob Backlund-Greg Valentine match with Johnny Valentine on commentary. The Bret Hart-Shawn Michaels marathon match is on there and I thought it ws very good. Look, all in all not a bad set. It isn't super inclusive as a set of that caliber would be at least ten disks large. There is a cool little time line feature on it that shows footage from the pinfalls of every title change, sans the Rpogers-Bruno, and Pedro-Stasiak changes as there is no footage of those.
The Loose Cannon set was awesome as sin. Brian Pillman was just awesome in the ring. I liked how they did include a match from Stampede he had. The set did a good job of representing his overall career as they had things on his from Stampede, NWA/WCW, ECW, and the WWF. I highly recomend this set, not only for the great footage but also the compelling story.
Hulk Hogan the Ultimate Anthology was pretty good. It is basically the Hulk Still Rules set with alot more footage. If you already have the prior Hulk set, then this may not be the set you want. I used to own that set but gave it to my Pastor so getting it again was no biggie for me. They have the famous Super Sunday AWA Title match against Nick Bockwinkel which was cool. They also had an old studio WWWF match where Hogan bloodied up Andre. If you are a Hogan fan you will love this set.

i've liked most of the ones i've seen, and will have to watch the new Hogan one and the championship one. Pillman would be great to see, but sad as well.

Not that it has anything to do with the DVDs but I remember seeing the matches that led up to Hogan becoming WWWF champ the first time. I was a big Bob Backlund fan and was shocked and crushed when the Iron Sheik defeated him through the Camel Clutch. To see Bob who was a master of submission moves lose to a submission move was really sad.
And I think everyone at the time was shocked and amazed when Hogan, who I seem to remember being a "heavy" around that time came out and kicked the Sheik's butt to become champ. And the crowd goes wild. ;D
Pretty neat stuff. I saw those MSG matches on USA network when we first got cable. Before that it was all regional NWA stuff out of Kansas City and St. Louis mainly with the heroes and heavies being Handsome Harley Race, Rick Flair, Bulldog Bob Brown (one of the early extreeeeme wrestlers, that guy couldn't tie his shoes without gushing blood), Colonel Buck Robley, Haystack Calhoon, Bruiser Brody, Rufus R Jones, Chief Jay Strongbow and so on. Andre the Giant would tour through the midwest sometimes and fight the really big guys like Haystack or Man Mountain Mike one on one or otherwise would fight 2 or 3 guys at once.
Good times, good times.

By the time Hogan won the title they had already dropped one of the W's and was simply the WWF. I think it was a huge coup for Vince to get Hogan who was coming off super white hot runs in the AWA and Japan. Throw in his mainstream noteiriety for Thunderlips and Vince couldn't have picked a better flagship tp build around.
The Spectacular Legacy of the AWA was pretty good. The documentary was top notch. It gave a very fair shake to the AWA. There were some innacuracies as far as when the AWA started, it was 1960, not 1957, but I am splitting hairs. It gives great insight to how Vinnie conquered wrestling and how his National expansion affected not only the AWA but the other territories. The match selection was okay, my major gripe is several of the matches were clipped. There is an LOD match on this set I did not have. It was them and Precious Paul against The Hennigs and the Crusher. I wish there was more older footage than there was, I have seen it out there so I know it exists. There is a brutal cage match between the Rockers and Sommers&Rose. Wicked brutal. If you were an AWA fan or just love classic wrestling, then this set is a keeper.

i can't seem to find that AWA set at Best Buy at all, but i think i would like it. it was sad for me to watch the demise of that company, since it was the first fed i ever saw live (had to see the Road Warriors get revenge on the Freebirds!). i wish i had gone more than twice though, especially to see the LOD as heels.

Yo Megs, they have a ton of the WWE DVD sets cheap at Walmart. They have the a display and some of their DVDs are $3.88 and some are $8.88
Some of the $3.88 ones are The Benoit set, The Superstar Billy Graham set, Brock Lesnar here comes the pain, Before they were Stars 2, and a bunch of PPVs. The $8.. ones include the Warriors set, Cena Word Life, and the RVD set, plus some of the newer PPVs. They also have the Greatest Wrestling Managers and the Stone Cold Truth. Super Values at that price. I am thinking of picking you up the Superstar set, let me know if you want it.

My Mother In Law got me the new ECW set. ECW Extreme Rules is okay. It has a mix of original ECW matches with some of the new ECW. They have the Flair/Big Show match and Flair really showed his passion for wrestling in that match. If you are an ECW fan you'll like this set, but it is the worst out of the three ECW releases. The thing that sticks out is you get to see some classic ECW and what made it so loved and see how far away from true ECW the new incarnation is. There is some good old ECW stuff, still makes me sad to see what Vince is doing to it.
1. Tarrot Card Reading
2. Joey Styles/Tazz Introduction
3. Sandman vs. Cactus Jack - ECW Heavyweight Title Bout, 7/1/95

Chad, i'll take anything you send me- Superstar would be great. i have the LOD, 80s Wrestlers and Dusty, but am pondering Roddy and the new Hulk one, plus i'd like the AWA at some point.
the ECW ones would be interesting to watch, but i just don't care for the "attitude" of the fed, and the new ECW just sucks.

Not sure if you still have them but I remember sending you the Benoit and Guererro sets as well. I looked at Walmart today and they were out of the cheap DVDs so I was not able to get the Superstar set, I didn't want to get it if I wasn't sure you wanted. Sorry.
