On a re-run of RIPLEY'S Strange but TRUE Oddities was a segment of a lady who had trained her pet Cat to do Remarkable tricks. She had trained her cat to eat with UTENSILS. Of course because the Cat cannot grasp a utensil, so the utensil has to be fastened to her paw, tied to the paw. But other than that, the lady does Not help, does Not hold the cat's paw. All she does is coax the cat a little. The first utensil was a FORK by which the Cat ate her regular cat-food. Then the second trick showed the Cat using a Sthingy to eat ice cream. But would not a normal ice-cream be too hard for the Cat to scoop? So what I think is the ice-cream would have to be extra-soft, partially melted, in order for the Cat to scoop from it. Just wondering.
There must be a malfunction because the Second Utensil I mentioned does Not come out as I had spelled it, no matter how many times I edit. Its supposed to be the utensil with concave part on a handle but for some reason a glitch prevents me from spelling the actual word. nosmileys#nosmileys#nosmileys#nosmileys#nosmileys

I put this in the MEOW thread because it falls under the general category of animals. This is NOT a joke. From Honolulu's Midweek paper comes this TRUE oddity: (Quote) A man who decided to wear a Pluto dog-mask to rob a mini mart in Cranberry, Pa. (near Pittsburgh), was Unsuccessful, forced to flee empty-handed when the clerk could Not bring himself to stop laughing at the disguise. (End of quote) This is NOT a joke.

The online catmunity is in morning. Last thursday morning Doris Edwards of dorissimo.net/ best know to people who frequent cat forums for playing the role "Queen Bitsy" (based after one of her cats) died suddenly. Doris had a wonderful sense of humor. I'm going to miss Queen Bitsy and her monthly mewsletter, the Weekly Purrsader.

One of the fur-cats caught a big mouse the other day, and then lost it, because she got lazy. She was letting the mouse run around, and it got a little too far away and climbed up into a tree.
She tried to climb into the tree but the mouse knew how to work the situation better and hid up on an inaccessible branch.
"Where's your mouse?" I asked, looking up into the tree.
"Meow?" she said, looking at me, looking sad and disappointed.

When its a cloudy day, no sun shining through any windows, Polly looks at me like she expects me to be able to control the sun and the clouds. And then scoulds me when I laugh and turn to walk away.

Zu just lazes about during these hot days, but today she really let her puffball toy have it for 5 minutes before she was tired.

From Midweek newspaper of July 27th comes this offbeat news: (Quote)Councilman Manfred Juraczka in Vienna Austria proposed, in order to alleviate the city's growing problem with pet droppings, to collect DNA samples from all registered dogs so that the soilers can be identified and their owners fined. (End of Quote)
Does anybody here have any comments? (And, hey, don't blame me. All I do is just REPORT the news.)

Would have to be a heavy fine to cover the cost of the DNA tests, but if it works why not.

i'd say cat owners were safe enough, but dog owners should have to pick up after their pests, i mean pets. especially BIG dogs.

Now that you mention it, David, I realize that I've NEVER seen CATS leave any "deposits." Apparently then, Cats are the most discreet of creatures. But the Drawback I've noticed is that it's so much harder to train Cats to perform stunts as compared to Dogs. Do you find that to be the case?

Did any of you catch the msn report on PETS who like to watch television? And it's not for only a few minutes but rather dogs and cats who watch TV for an Hour at a stretch. In some cases, a pet watching TV will sometimes walk BEHIND the TV, curious to see if it can find the people INSIDE the TV set.
Apparently, the Pets must have picked up this couch-potato habit from their masters. Because pets watch TV with their masters. Then later on, some pets will like to watch TV when even their masters are Not there.
It would be interesting to determine what are the favorite TV shows favored by the pets. For starters, Megs, why don't you let ZU watch a video of LION-MARU (another cat!!). And let's see what happens.

On a couple of occasions the fur-cats have watched movies (seemed especially willing to do so if it was warm inside and freezing cold and wet outside). Noticed they were agitated and nervous watching action films, and calm watching relaxing films (although that's probably not too surprising, because they're smart).
I know of a dog that had a special 6-hour VHS tape of Twilight Zone episodes made for her. When her owner-buddy goes out he puts the tape in, because TZ is the only thing that'll calm her down. It's true.

This concerns a Chimpanzee but I post it here because it still falls under the Category of animals: It is a 27-year old Female Chimp in northern China at the Quinling Safari Park. The CHIMP has been addicted to smoking cigarettes for many years now, and only recently have zookeepers taken action to make her kick the habit. The zookeepers are at fault too, because they had been providing her with the cigarettes.
The Chimp's chain-smoking began many years ago when her spouse died and she began to feel depressed. The cigarette habit began when the Chimp began picking up cigarette BUTTS from VISITORS. Evidently, when a Visitor was finished smoking, he would toss that BUTT in the Chimp's area, and she would pick it up.
That led to the Zookeepers giving the Chimp a full-cigarette. It was Not explained why the zookeepers did that, and on a continual basis. For myself, I can only surmise that they did that for her out of pity when they saw her pining away for her spouse that had died. Evidently, the Chain-smoking must have alleviated her grief.
